Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals his quarterback plans for Week 16

The condition of Patrick Mahomes’ ankle following a sprain will influence many decisions for Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. During his press conference on Tuesday, the longtime coach addressed his plan to play with or without his star quarterback this Saturday.

“I think it’s a little more commonplace. Let’s see what he (Patrick Mahomes) does and how he feels. “He’s always honest with me,” Reid said. “So he’ll shoot right at me and I’ll be able to see him. Today is an easier day. So get him in there and move around a little.”

Mahomes has dealt with ankle sprains and soreness in the past, but the risk of another injury before the postseason has Reid considering an alternative for the matchup against the Houston Texans.

“He (Mahomes) will talk to me. The doctors will talk to me. Coach, keep it open. Once you’re out of the game,” Reid said. “He’ll shoot you pretty much straight up. So, at the start of the game he’s doing really well.”

If Mahomes is unable to play this week, backup Carson Wentz will start and resume his backup role last week against the Cleveland Browns.

“Yeah. Well, I mean, he (Carson Wentz) started in the league and was successful. He has a great feel for this offense. He’s very smart (and has a) big arm,” Reid said. “I like the way he carries himself. I like everything about him. He should start somewhere in this league, you know?

Wentz was an MVP candidate before suffering an injury during his time as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback. He has the confidence of the offense if he has to start on Saturday.
