The first Oscar shortlists for 2025 are here

We’ve gotten a clearer picture of what the Oscar race will look like, given all the nominations for pre-award shows (like the Golden Globes) that have been announced so far. But now we have an even clearer picture with the publication of the shortlists for 10 categories from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. These categories include Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Music), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound and Visual Effects.

Here’s how it works: Academy members (in some cases just members of a specific industry, such as the documentary film industry or the makeup artist and hairdressing industry) narrowed the film pool down to a shortlist of 10 to 20 nominees. For example, the shortlist for the documentary came from a pool of 169 eligible films. Next, members of the documentary film department will vote from the shortlist of 15 films to recommend five nominees.

In certain cases, Academy members were required to meet a minimum reputation requirement in order to be eligible to vote for the category’s shortlist. In addition, they had to watch all the films that were shortlisted in order to vote for the final nominations. In some craft categories, such as makeup and hairstyling and visual effects, members of the relevant industries are “invited to view excerpts and interviews with the artists from each of the shortlisted films” before voting for the final nominations. You can read more about the exact voting details for each category here and view the shortlists below.
