College football fans have seen the future of the wide receiver position, and his name is Ryan Williams.

Williams, who doesn’t turn 18 until February, shined as a true freshman at Alabama, rushing for 857 yards and eight touchdowns on 45 catches despite his age and inexperience. That included a 177-yard burst in a win over Georgia that helped put Williams on the national map.

Alabama isn’t used to losing players of Williams’ caliber, even in the transfer portal era, but speculation has fans wondering whether the young receiver could transfer before 2025.

Is Ryan Williams in the transfer portal?

Williams is not currently in the transfer portal, despite speculation from fans that he could move. There is no evidence that he plans to enter the portal.

While the wild world of college football can change quickly and Alabama fans may not be able to breathe a sigh of relief until the portal closes for the winter on December 28th, rumors of a Williams transfer appear to be just that: rumors.

It may no longer be the Nick Saban era in Tuscaloosa, but Alabama likely has the resources to retain a player like Williams. The rising sophomore is projected to be one of the top wide receivers in the country in 2025, when he’ll be just 18 years old, and he and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith are expected to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft as early as 2027.

The speculation surrounding Williams is fueled by the fact that Alabama has lost some talent to the transfer portal. While a highly touted recruiting class will help replace some of that, the Crimson Tide have already seen 15 players in the portal.

15 Alabama players have entered the portal since the window opened in early December, plus TE Danny Smith, who has opted to return to the Tide.

Five players have already found new homes, including a former starter in CB Devonta Smith (Notre Dame) and WR Kobe Prentice (Baylor), who had 60 catches in three seasons at Alabama.

As of this writing, Williams is not part of the group of Alabama players in the transfer portal – and there is no clear indication that he will be in the near future.
