A new affordable housing development is opening in Kapolei

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A new, innovative affordable housing community is welcoming families to West Oahu.

Parkway Village in Kapolei celebrated its grand opening Tuesday with 401 rental units – ranging from studios to four-bedrooms – for individuals and families earning 30 to 60 percent of the area median income (AMI).

As well as providing much-needed affordable housing, the project also provides schools, green spaces and community areas to promote connection and wellbeing.

This includes Hawaii’s first privately developed public charter preschool, established in partnership with Kamehameha Schools and operated by PACT (Parents and Children Together), which will serve 80 keiki in four classrooms.

And in 2025, a community preschool exclusively for Parkway Village residents will open, operated by Keiki O Ka Aina.

Meanwhile, a Freight Farm, a hydroponic container farm in the community garden, will teach keiki about farming and healthy eating habits while offering residents the opportunity to connect through sustainability and farming.

Parkway Village was developed by Kobayashi Group and Ahe Group and made possible through a public-private collaboration involving the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation, the City and County of Honolulu, the Department of Land Management, Kamehameha Schools, CVS Health and other partners are involved.

Gov. Josh Green said, “This project serves people who simply don’t make a lot of money. Imagine trying to live on $35,000 to $70,000 a year. It’s almost impossible if people like this group don’t get involved, and that’s the point. For this reason, we support housing construction together. Otherwise, it is completely impossible for so many people who do necessary work for our state to actually live and stay here.”

Tuesday’s celebration marks the first phase of Parkway Village. A second phase is scheduled to open next year.
