Australia vs India: Third Test in Brisbane drawn after rain

This outcome was always likely as only 131.2 overs were possible on the first three days – all the more so when India’s last wicket pair Bumrah and Akash Deep dramatically avoided the second blow late on the fourth day.

India’s innings was finally over when Deep was bowled out by Travis Head for 31 for five overs on the final day, but no further play was possible before lunch due to rain and the threat of lightning.

As the players returned to glorious sunshine, there was a brief hope of something spectacular.

Australia’s second innings lasted just 18 overs but it was enough for both sides to leave Queensland claiming the upper hand in a series that lived up to the hype.

Australia largely dominated the first four days after leveling the series in Adelaide, but were not out of danger when Steve Smith fell as the fifth wicket and the lead was just 218.

Earlier, Bumrah had bowled Usman Khawaja for eight and had a chop from Marnus Labuschagne caught behind for one. With 53 in 10 Tests, including 21 in this series, he is now India’s leading wicket-taker in Australia.

Labuschagne, meanwhile, made 18 runs in four innings either side of a 64 in the second Test.

Opener Nathan McSweeney’s difficult start to international cricket continued as he offered deep an under edge for four. The seamer had also left Mitchell Marsh, who was promoted to number four to increase the points ratio, falling behind by two points.

Smith was caught on the leg side for the second time in the series, but Cummins’ contribution, Alex Carey’s 20 not out and Travis Head’s 17 probably put Australia on a brisk if unconvincing path to dominance.

Even more worrying for Australia was the sight of Head, whose first innings 152 came after 140 in Adelaide and who was struggling with obvious groin problems.

He was absent from the field for 13 possible balls in India’s innings, but later played down any injury concerns.
