First day of weather alert for Thursday as most snowfall sees the highest snowfall of the season

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Wednesday will be relatively quiet compared to what we expect on Thursday.

For some of us, there will be more snow on Thursday than we have had all season so far. The impact will be greatest on Thursday afternoon and evening.

A few snow showers are still possible early, and a few slippery patches are possible. However, no major impacts are expected. Skies will remain mostly cloudy throughout the day, with highs in the mid to upper 20s.

Thursday was the day we’ve been talking about all week and due to the potential for snow there is now a first weather alert day. Communities south of Highway 64 are sure to see the biggest snowfall of the season. Some breezy winds will also blow snow around, and snowfall will be heavy enough to accumulate on the roads at times. Snowfall totals could be as high as 4-6 inches in some communities, with totals even higher in some communities. The heaviest snowfall will occur between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The snowfall should stop by the time you drive to work Friday morning.

Due to the snow, First Alert Weather Day is now active for tomorrow.

Mild air will return to north central Wisconsin by the middle of next week, meaning the chances of us having a white Christmas will be fairly low, even with snowfall expected this weekend. It won’t be as warm as the 50s we had at Christmas last year, but some of us could see temperatures in the upper 30s or lower 40s by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day next week.
