How much money do musicians make from Christmas carols?

It comes every year, and yet people seem surprised when they walk past a store in November and hear Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” As the nights grow dark and cold, Christmas lights are lit in every home and on every high street as far as the eye can see, and people prepare their chimneys for Old Saint Nicholas’ visit on December 25th, we are treated to a gush happy mood bombarded pieces for the better part of two months.

There are two different camps for listening to Christmas music: those who love it and those who hate it. For some, the music has officially peaked when sleigh bells are heard and soft-sounding songs by Paul McCartney, The Darkness and The Pogues are played in pubs, shops and on television. Then there are others who hear the same thing and want to cut their ears off in frustration.

There is no perfect time for people to start listening to Christmas music. People’s opinions are divided, as some believe they can get merry as soon as Thanksgiving is over, others strongly believe it should wait until December, and others would put it off even further.

According to the data, Spotify tends to see a spike in Christmas music around November 13th, which is likely when people start to give in to temptation and steadily get into the festive spirit. No matter when you start listening to Christmas songs, one thing remains the same: the songs are played a lot every year.

Some Christmas songs have been classics for decades, and no matter what’s going on in the world, no matter how depressing or uplifting things may be, they’ll be played. Christmas carols remain a constant in an ever-changing and persistently volatile world; The only thing more obvious than that is death. But if you take a quick look at it, the question becomes: How much do artists make because their songs are played on the radio by individuals, stores and bars for a solid two months each year?

So how much do artists get paid for their Christmas songs?

Of course, the amount an artist earns for their Christmas songs depends on how popular that particular Christmas song is. If a track is played frequently, the song will make more, but if it only shows up occasionally and ends up at the bottom of most people’s holiday playlists, it won’t make as much.

To give you some rough numbers, Mariah Carey is expected to earn a staggering £2.4 million every year because of her song All I Want For Christmas Is You. In 2024, this figure will be even higher as it has been confirmed that Carey will appear before Netflix’s NFL games and her fee for this will be very high.

Some other big Christmas songs also make good money, but don’t come close to Mariah’s numbers. For example, with “Merry Xmas Everybody,” Slade earns around £520,000 a year. Wham, The Pogues and Bing Crosby now earn more than £300,000 a year.

It’s impossible to put an exact number on how much artists will earn from their Christmas songs, but if an artist is lucky enough to have their music considered the epitome of Christmas music, they could make millions, like Mariah Carey.
