Steve Harvey’s death rumor was sparked by false AI story

The rumors about Steve Harvey’s death via artificial intelligence appear to be greatly exaggerated.

In a case of When AI Goes Wrong, a story claiming the comedy veteran died late Tuesday led to many social media posters mourning Harvey’s death. The problem: the story is wrong.

An article titled “Steve Harvey Passed Away Today: Remembering the Legacy of a Comedy Legend” was posted on Trend Cast News and picked up by Newsbreak, a popular media roundup site that has a history of sharing “AI- Fiction” was caught. The fake news story – which listed a future publication date of December 19, 2024 – was still available on Newsbreak’s website as of Wednesday morning.

Representatives for Harvey did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. However, the comedian doesn’t appear to be at the morgue, considering he posted multiple times on Facebook and X on Wednesday morning.

Still, the “news” of Harvey’s death resulted in Harvey being the second most popular Google search on Wednesday morning. It also led to reactions from many on social media.

Others went a step further and suggested that Harvey should file a lawsuit against the website behind the nonsense story.

“I don’t like this guy, but I hope he catches wind of this article and sues whoever wrote this article,” said a commenter on Newsbreak. “Basically, you wished death on this man out here by laying on this man’s soul like that. Isn’t that a (bitch)?”

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time that Harvey, 67, has been the subject of fake death rumors. In October, Snopes debunked a false rumor that Harvey had died in a car accident – a rumor that had circulated several times in recent years.

The “Family Feud” host has had a lot of fun with stories about his death in the past, like when he posted this picture on X in 2023:
