Suspect dead, no officer injured in police shooting at north Phoenix mall

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — One suspect is dead and no officers were injured following a police shooting in north Phoenix Wednesday morning.

Shortly after 11 a.m., authorities were initially called to the area of ​​Interstate 17 and Thunderbird Road

Phoenix police confirmed the suspect died at the scene and no officers were injured.

Highway traffic cameras showed over a dozen Phoenix police patrol vehicles surrounding the mall with officers drawing their weapons in a tactical position. A portion of the Whataburger parking lot was also taped off.

Both directions of Thunderbird from 31st Avenue to I-17 will be closed for an extended portion of the day.

The I-17 exits to Thunderbird Road were closed but have since reopened.

Police are actively working to determine what led to the shooting. Residents are asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

This is the 54th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 90th in the state in 2024.
