Mikel Arteta believes winning the Carabao Cup can be the springboard to winning bigger trophies for Arsenal as they prepare for the quarter-final against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Arteta celebrates his fifth anniversary in charge on Friday but only has an FA Cup win and two Community Shields to his name in his first season, having been Premier League runners-up in the last two seasons. The Arsenal boss is likely to field a strong side against Palace despite a lack of defensive options, with teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly expected to start again at left-back in the absence of Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Arsenal have not won the League Cup since 1993 and Arteta will be hoping they can end that drought in mid-March and use the tournament to build momentum.

“I think so,” he said. “That’s what I fully believe in: the fact that you win and get to the next round and that creates something different in the team and that’s why these types of games are so important.”

“It’s really helpful. It brings faith, trust, positive energy, touching the trophy, being in the semi-finals and beating someone in the final; It is this energy that creates the right path to do something different, especially because of the timing and when the competition is held in this country there is this momentum.”

Asked if he would celebrate his anniversary with a glass of wine on Friday, Arteta said: “I don’t drink wine but it will be a special day: five years in this job at a club of this size is a big deal, so I do . “I am very grateful.”

Gabriel Jesus has a chance of starting against Palace despite his struggles this season. The Brazilian striker has only scored once – in the Carabao Cup win over Preston in October.

“I don’t know if it’s confidence, but obviously he has the will to get the ball in the net and he’ll get some momentum,” Arteta said. “When he plays in this position, he has to perform in these moments and he really tries hard.”
