LA Deputy Mayor Brian Williams is placed on leave as the FBI investigates a bomb threat to City Hall

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — FBI agents searched the home of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Brian Williams on Tuesday in connection with a bomb threat he allegedly made against City Hall earlier this year, a spokeswoman for Mayor Karen Bass said.

The mayor’s office was informed of the search, according to a statement from Bass spokesman Zach Seidl released Wednesday afternoon.

Williams was “immediately placed on administrative leave,” the statement said. “The mayor is taking this matter very seriously. When the threat was reported, the LAPD investigated the situation and concluded there was no imminent danger. After further investigation, the LAPD referred this matter to the FBI for further investigation.”

According to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department, the agency’s initial investigation determined that Williams was likely the “source of the threat.”

In February 2023, Bass announced the appointment of Williams as Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, overseeing the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, Port of Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles World Airport Police Department, and the Department of Emergency Management supervised.

“My most important job as mayor is to keep Angelenos safe,” Bass said in a statement at the time. “The only way to achieve this is to hold people who commit crimes accountable and take real steps to prevent crimes from happening in the first place.”
