Doug Gottlieb, Green Bay loses to D-II team after “Nobody U” comment

A week after Doug Gottlieb referred to weaker potential opponents as “Nobody U,” his Green Bay men’s basketball team lost to Division II Michigan Tech 72-70 on Wednesday, its eighth straight loss.

Green Bay took a double-digit lead at halftime and led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Michigan Tech came back to take the lead with just under eight minutes left. The two teams battled back and forth until Michigan Tech’s Marcus Tomashek hit a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left, giving the Huskies a lead they never relinquished.

In a press conference last week after the Phoenix’s loss to Milwaukee, Gottlieb explained his scheduling outlook and used the now infamous “Nobody U” phrase.

“One of the reasons I want to play against better teams is because it’s 2 degrees outside and snowing. I don’t really like the idea of Nobody U coming in here,” he said. “What do we learn when we play a game where we win by 20 points? There is a methodology and I need to adapt it in the future.”

“Every game on our schedule is a game we can lose,” Gottlieb continued. “And no one else does that. Now you know why.”

After Wednesday’s loss, Gottlieb took to social media to respond to his viral press conference.

“Done with this crap,” he wrote down

Speaking to the media after the game, Gottlieb was asked about his activities off the field and his focus on work. He got into a fight with ESPN’s Adam Schefter on X earlier this week and still hosts a daily radio show on Fox Sports Radio.

“Whatever I do will attract a lot of attention,” he said. “I sometimes have a certain tone in the way I speak and especially in the way I tweet, which can upset people. I promise you, even if it is negative now, it will soon be positive. Keep all receipts and we’ll just keep doing our job.”

Green Bay fell to 2-11 this season after losing to Michigan Tech. The Phoenix’s last three losses in Division I have come by an average of 20 points. Green Bay is 0-3 in the Horizon League and will face Drake, one of the four remaining undefeated teams in Division I, on Saturday.

“I’m more committed to this job than anyone ever has been,” Gottlieb said. “And I’m going to stick it out until we win a Horizon League championship. This is my dream job and I will not fail to give the required 100 percent performance.”

Gottlieb was hired in May after being one of the final candidates for the position in Green Bay. He replaced Sundance Wicks, who led the Phoenix to an 18-14 record in his debut season and then left to become head coach at Wyoming.

Gottlieb had no collegiate coaching experience, but was on the U.S. team’s staff at the 2009 and 2017 Maccabiah Games and served as head coach in 2017 and assistant coach in 2009 under Bruce Pearl.
