Plane crashes into vacant building in US near Honolulu airport, killing 2 pilots | World News

In a tragic incident reported from Honolulu on Tuesday afternoon, a small cargo plane crashed into a vacant building and burst into flames, killing both pilots aboard the plane, authorities said.

Kamaka Air Flight 689 crashed into an empty building at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.

A video of the plane shows the plane flying sideways over the airport property at a low altitude before colliding with the building, producing thick black smoke.

According to an audio recording obtained by Hawaii News Now, the control tower asked the pilots of Kamaka Flight 689, “Kamaka Flight 689, you’re turning right, right?” To which the pilots responded, “Kamaka 689, we, we have, uh, we are out of control here.”

The control tower said, “Okay, Kamaka 689, if you can land, if you can line it up, that’s fine.” “Any runway, any place you can use,” the Associated News reported. But a few moments later the plane crashed.

Kamaka Air CEO David Hinderland said the names of the two pilots have not been released, adding: “It is with a heavy heart that Kamaka Air confirms the loss of two members of the Kamaka Air family in an accident.”

However, local media reported that family members of the first pilot identified him as Hiram Defries, a Punahou School graduate in his 20s who was a pilot in training, while the second pilot identified him as Preston Kaluhiwa, a Kamehameha Schools graduate became.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash that killed two pilots, while the Honolulu Fire Department said no one else was injured in the incident.
