RFK says he 100% supports Trump’s stance on abortion and won’t go overboard on food regulation

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was on Capitol Hill this week to drum up support for his nomination to be the next head of the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to a senator he spoke with, Kennedy echoes President-elect Donald Trump’s stance on abortion and has signaled he will exercise restraint in regulating the agricultural industry.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said after his meeting with Kennedy that his opinion on abortion was “whatever Trump decides” and that Kennedy would support him “100%.” Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to let the states decide for themselves and is against a nationwide ban on abortion. He has also expressed support for certain limited exceptions to abortion restrictions, such as when the mother’s life is in danger.

Tuberville also said he spoke with Kennedy about not “overreaching” in regulating farmers. The senator told reporters that Kennedy is “very committed to protecting their livelihoods” and “understands that our farmers are in trouble, and we want to make sure we have farmers who can make a living.”

Kennedy’s nomination has drawn skepticism from both pro-life groups and the agricultural sector. Pro-life groups have expressed concern over Kennedy’s past statements extolling a liberal position on reproductive rights, while people in the agricultural sector have expressed concern over Kennedy’s crusade against processed foods and pesticides. The fears of those in the agricultural sector were heightened after Trump said he wanted to “go wild on health care and shake things up dramatically” on Kennedy.

However, according to Tuberville, Kennedy is aware of the need to find balance in regulating the food industry and he confirmed that his views on abortion have evolved in line with Trump’s.

“We talked about abortion, and the most important thing about abortion is that he tells everyone, ‘Listen, whatever President Trump supports, I will support him 100%,'” Tuberville told reporters after his meeting with Kennedy .

Tuberville emphasized that Trump has expressed support for three major exceptions to abortion restrictions, including cases where the mother’s life is in danger or when rape or incest is the cause of a woman’s pregnancy.

“I just asked him, ‘You’ve been pro-abortion in the past,’ and he said, ‘Well, basically he and President Trump sat down and talked about it and they both came to an agreement.’ “Hey, Roe-Wade is gone, it’s gone to the states, let the people vote on it,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville added that he also agreed with Trump’s stance on abortion, telling reporters that while he was pro-life, he was also “glad that American citizens can vote in their state,” adding that Kennedy felt the same way .

While recounting his conversation with Kennedy to reporters, Tuberville also shared that the two discussed how Kennedy would approach the agricultural industry given his strong belief that the American food system was deeply flawed. Republicans from states where agriculture is a major industry have expressed concern that Kennedy is restricting modern farming techniques. Meanwhile, a Michigan soybean and corn farmer called Kennedy’s nomination a “danger” to the agricultural industry.

Tuberville echoed the concerns of his fellow Republican lawmakers after his meeting with Kennedy, telling reporters that while his constituents are “very concerned” about food safety, they don’t want regulations to be so strict that they put farmers out of work.

“I understand that,” Tuberville said of his constituents’ concerns, “and he’s totally on board. He understands that our farmers are in trouble and we want to make sure we have farmers who can make a living and we’re not doing that. “We’re not going to lose our family farms.”
