Trump and Musk hit back after Jeffries blames House GOP for breaking bipartisan agreement

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called out House Republicans for violating a bipartisan agreement to fund the government and avoid a government shutdown during a speech at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C , and accused them of hurting everyday Americans across the country.

On Wednesday, House GOP leaders scrambled to find a replacement plan after an initial bipartisan agreement to avoid a partial government shutdown this Friday was overwhelmed by a torrent of opposition from conservative leaders.

Jeffries spoke about the failed deal and blamed Republicans and their leaders for failing to reach the agreement.

“Republicans in the House, Democrats in the House, Senate. “Republicans and Senate Democrats have reached a bipartisan agreement to fund the government, keep it open and meet the needs of the American people,” Jeffries said, noting that the agreement would provide disaster relief for those affected by extreme weather events. “House Republicans have now unilaterally decided to break a bipartisan agreement they had reached. House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government and hurt everyday Americans across the country… An agreement is an agreement. It was non-partisan and there was nothing left to say.”

The minority leader also fired off a post

As of Wednesday, the U.S. national debt – a measure of what U.S. taxpayers owe to the country’s creditors – had reached $36,189,345,826,140.62 and was rising rapidly with no signs of slowing. The federal government’s budget deficit totaled $1.834 trillion in the recently completed fiscal year, making it the third largest in U.S. history.

Billionaire Elon Musk, who was appointed by President-elect Trump to co-chair the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), criticized the bill on his social media platform, saying the 1,547-page continuing resolution (CR) bill is full of “pork.”

Musk fired back at Jeffries on X.

“They seem to think the public is stupid. They are not,” he wrote.

Musk also wrote in a separate post: “The voice of the people has been heard. It was a good day for America.”

Trump strongly opposed the bill in a series of posts on Truth Social on Wednesday.

“It sounds like the ridiculous and extraordinarily expensive Continuing Resolution PLUS is dying out quickly, but can anyone imagine passing it without either ending or extending the debt ceiling guillotine coming up in June?” the new president asked. “If Democrats don’t lift the debt ceiling now or significantly extend it, I will fight to the end. This is an evil TRAP set by the Radical Left Democrats!”

He continued, saying Democrats want to embarrass Republicans when it comes to the vote in June and the people who extended the vote from Sept. 28 to June 1 “should be ashamed of themselves.”

Trump called the extension a “political misstep” and reiterated the bad timing as Congress demanded pay raises.

“Hopefully you will be eligible for such an increase in the near future as we “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he said.

In another post, Trump explained that trying to pass a clean CR without all the bells and whistles that Democrats want would be destructive to the country and his government, not the Biden administration.

“Any Republican who would be stupid enough to do this should and will go to the primary,” Trump warned. “Everything should be done and fully negotiated before I take office on January 20, 2025.”

Congressional leaders released the text of their 1,547-page CR on Tuesday evening after last-minute negotiations delayed its originally scheduled release on Sunday. A source familiar with the discussions told Fox News Digital more specifically that the deal was largely reached between the top two Democrats and Republicans in each chamber.

Since its release, the CR has faced fierce opposition from conservatives and Republican hardliners in the House, many of whom are more frustrated that the bill brings with it unrelenting political champions than a “clean” extension of government funding.

While the bill, if passed, would prevent a partial government shutdown until March 14, it also includes provisions on health care and ethanol fuel, as well as $100 billion in disaster relief funding and measures to finance the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The bill also includes the first pay raise for lawmakers since 2009.
