Jim Carrey retracts retirement comments after claiming he ‘needs money’

Jim Carrey goes back and says he’s ready to retire.

The 62-year-old actor, who recently said he returned to the big screen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 because he “needed the money,” made it clear he’s not quite ready to leave the spotlight just yet.

In 2022, Carrey made headlines when he shared that he was “pretty serious” about retiring from acting.

Now, however, he says, “You can’t be sure about these things,” he tells Comicbook.com: “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I said more ‘power rest’.” Because once you or a group of people you really enjoyed working with come up with a good idea, things just change.”

Just last week, at the UK premiere of his latest project in London, the funnyman told the Associated Press that he returned to the Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe because “I bought a lot of stuff and honestly I need the money.”

But Carrey did an about-face to Comicbook.com, sharing, “It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money.”

Carrey began retirement chatter in 2022 while promoting “Sonic 2.” He played mad scientist Ivo Robotnik/Doctor Eggman in all three action-adventure films.

However, he also teased that with the “right ideas” he would be willing to star in sequels to “The Mask” (1994) or “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000).

“It depends. If the Angels come with some kind of gold-ink script that tells me it’s going to be really important for people to see, then maybe I’ll keep going. But I’m taking a break,” Carrey said at the time.

The actor expressed his desire for a “quiet life.”

“I feel like – and this is something you won’t hear another celebrity say for a long time – I’ve had enough,” the “Dumb and Dumber” star said. “I have done enough. I am enough.”

When AP confronted Carrey about those comments on Dec. 10, he chuckled and said, “That might have been an exaggeration.”

In addition to Carrey, “Sonic 3” stars Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally and Krysten Ritter.

The film hits theaters on Friday, December 20th.
