CHARLOTTE, NC – The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women’s basketball team saw its nine-game winning streak end at the hands of No. 10 Oklahoma 72-62 on Tuesday night (Dec. 17). The Sooners lost the Jumpman Invitational at the Spectrum Center. The Sooners used a run early in the fourth quarter to take control of the game.

Michigan was within three early in the fourth quarter, but Oklahoma scored 12 of the first 16 points and took control of the game. Michigan finished within single digits again but couldn’t get any closer in the contest.

UM had a trio of double-digit scorers, led by Mila Holloway20 points on her return to her hometown. Jordan Hobbs went for 14 and Syla swords chipped in an 11 as Michigan struggled with foul trouble throughout the game, as two players were fouled and Michigan was whistled for 26 fouls. OU had a 44-37 lead on the glass when Michigan was outrebounded for the first time this season.

Michigan fell behind early and was down 11-5 with 6:31 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines responded with six straight points, scoring four of them Olivia Olson and a basket in transition by Hobbs made the score 11-1 at the halfway point of the quarter.

A Swords stepback jumper down the left side brought Michigan even with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter. She suffered her second foul on the ensuing defensive possession and was benched for the remainder of the period as Oklahoma finished the first ten minutes with a 7-0 run and a 20-13 lead.

The Sooners scored the first two points of the second quarter to take a 22-13 lead before back-to-back goals Julia Grabovskaia and Hobbs pulled Michigan to within five points, 22-17. A free throw from Olson and four straight points from Holloway made it 22-0 with just under five minutes left in the second quarter as UM went on a 9-0 run over 4:34 of play.

Holloway hit a second-chance three-pointer from the left wing after the media timeout, increasing Michigan’s run to 12-0 and a 25-22 lead. Oklahoma responded and eventually took a 30-27 lead with two free throws with 1:27 left. Alyssa Crockett He hit a three-pointer in the left corner at 1:09, bringing Michigan even on the ensuing possession.

UM held Oklahoma to a season-low for points in a quarter, giving up just 10 points to the Sooners as the teams entered halftime tied at 30.

The Sooners made an initial three-pointer early in the third quarter, but Michigan responded with seven straight points and an Olson free throw for a 37-33 lead. A Hobbs runner in the lane kept the Michigan lead at 4:39:35 with 6:39 to play. Oklahoma responded with a 9-0 run, forcing a Michigan timeout with 4:05 on the clock with Sooner leading 44-39.

Michigan ran the game perfectly out of the timeout when Olson found a cutting Swords for a short jump off the glass, stopping the Sooner run and giving Michigan possession at 44-41.

A putback by Grabovskaia on Michigan’s final possession of the third quarter once again brought UM within one possession, 50-47, heading into the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma opened the final quarter by scoring 12 of its first 16 points to pull away from the Wolverines. Michigan tried to hang on, scoring a three-pointer from Swords after the media timeout to cut the deficit to single digits, 64-56, with just over four minutes left, but Michigan got no closer.

Michigan concludes the non-conference portion of its season on Friday (Dec. 20), traveling to Akron to face the Zips at noon.
