The Dolphins are finding out if Daniel Jones will join them for the remainder of the 2024 season

The Miami Dolphins may or may not have actually had interest in former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, but regardless of whether they did or not, he will not be heading to Miami this season.

Jones, who was released a few days ago after requesting release from the Giants, cleared waivers on Monday and will reportedly join the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. It’s unclear whether the Dolphins’ apparent interest in Jones was real or just a matter of media speculation.

The Dolphins are sticking with Skylar Thompson as Tua Tagovailoa’s backup. Miami head coach Mike McDaniel told the media this week that he still has confidence in the three-year pro despite him being withdrawn after two games last Sunday.

Thompson failed to pass for Tagovailoa on his second play. The ball was returned for a touchdown and Tagovailoa had to go back onto the field to end the game.

The Dolphins have had a ton of backup players this year and should get Tyler Huntley back soon, but the reality is that if Tagovailoa fails, Miami’s chances diminish as well.

Miami prepared for this nightmare scenario when it decided not to sign a quality free agent signal-caller in March. The Dolphins instead considered Thompson the best choice. After three seasons with Miami, Thompson’s growth was negligible.

Jones wouldn’t have made Miami a Super Bowl contender, but he would have had more experience than Thompson and perhaps a change of scenery would have benefited him.

If the Dolphins had added Jones, it would have just cost a little more money, which they could have easily afforded.

While Jones isn’t considered a great quarterback, how much worse would he have been at the position than Miami’s current backup?

We may never know if this is a missed opportunity by Dolphins general manager Chris Grier or if the former Giants quarterback simply made the decision to choose the Vikings over Miami or anyone else.
