Dozens of men found guilty in Gisèle Pelicot mass rape trial

Dozens of men, including Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband, have been found guilty of raping and sexually abusing her in a historic trial that shocked France.

Dominique Pelicot, 72, who pleaded guilty to drugging her unconscious over a decade and inviting dozens of men to rape her, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the chief judge of the court in the southern city of Avignon. Roger Arata.

According to NBC News’ British broadcast partner Sky News, another 46 men were found guilty of rape, two of attempted rape and two of sexual assault in the high-profile case. They were between 26 and 74 years old and received prison sentences of three to eight years.

A court in the southern French city of Avignon is indicting Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old pensioner, for repeatedly raping his heavily sedated wife Gisele Pelicot over a decade and recruiting dozens of strangers to rape her in her own bed.

About 15 of them had admitted the facts, although only a handful of the defendants expressed remorse ahead of their sentences.

Pelicot listened in the courtroom as her ex-husband’s sentence was read. A number of other defendants were also present in the room, surrounded by police officers.

With emotions expected to run high, about 200 police officers were expected to be deployed in and around the courthouse, packed with family members of the defendants, spectators and journalists from around the world. More than 150 journalists were accredited to cover the trial, which many activists see as a turning point for women’s rights in France.
