Understanding milk allergies
According to the Mayo Clinic, a milk allergy is an immune system reaction to milk proteins, unlike milk intolerance, which does not involve the immune system. Symptoms of a milk allergy can range from hives, swelling, and wheezing to severe anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that can impede breathing.
While milk allergies are relatively common, there have been previous incidents of undeclared milk allergens that led to recalls.
In early 2024, both candy bars and Costco’s Kirkland Signature butter faced recalls due to similar labeling violations.
