USPS recommends beingware of fake text messages about undeliverable packages

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The U.S. Postal Service is warning customers to beware of fake text messages claiming their packages cannot be delivered.

According to the USPS, scammers send messages claiming that a package cannot be delivered to the recipient until the sender provides more information.

The Postal Service says it doesn’t notify customers directly via text message about problems with packages, claiming the messages are fake.

The scam works by tricking the recipient into revealing banking or password information.

“These particular types of text messages, these types of correspondences, attempt to obtain information from customers – their personal information,” said Natashi Garvins of the US Postal Service. “So once again, the Postal Service is not attempting to obtain customers’ personal information through text messages, emails or phone calls.”

Customers are encouraged to report suspicious text messages to the US Postal Inspection Service.
