Purdue hires Jake Trump as defensive ends coach

Two former Barry Odom employees in Arkansas are officially setting their sights on West Lafayette. After Kelvin Green left Fayetteville on Wednesday, Jake Trump, who was hired by the Boilermakers as defensive ends coach, also left, Boiler Upload reported Monday.

“Jake’s experiences will be extremely valuable to the development of our program,” Odom said in a statement. “He has worked his way up the coaching profession and continues to make an impact every step of the way. His ability to recruit players, network and coach his group will be of great benefit to our team. Jake understands our defensive philosophy by helping to build it over the years as a player and as a coach.

Trump was the Razorbacks’ senior defensive analyst and assistant linebackers coach and spent the last five years on Sam Pittman’s staff, including three years when Barry Odom was defensive coordinator at Arkansas.

This season, Trump helped Arkansas linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr. earn All-SEC honors, which was a big reason the Razorbacks allowed just 121.8 rushing yards per game.

Trump and Odom go back quite a while, as the former Missouri linebacker played for the current Purdue head coach with the Tigers from 2015 to 2018 and then worked with the inside linebackers and special teams unit as a student assistant coach in 2019 and a year as a defensive assistant at Nevada in 2020.

Trump is now following Odom to a third goal by joining the Boilermakers’ new staff as defensive ends coach.
