James Gunn says his ‘Superman’ was inspired by ‘Game of Thrones’ and talks crypto and other superheroes

James Gunn has finally revealed his vision for Superman in the film’s first teaser trailer, released on Thursday. He unveils a superhero film that “Guardians of the Galaxy” says aims to balance “Game of Thrones”-style epic storytelling with humanity. Filmmaker.

“That’s the most important thing I try to do as I move forward step by step, writing the script, building the film, editing it together, is to maintain this fantastic building in many ways.” has just as many elements with “Game of.” “Thrones,” such as the Marvel Universe, which is “an alternate world where metahumans just happen to exist, people put on costumes, and fight crime for very different reasons, as you’ll see in the film,” Gunn said in a Q&A. Response event after the trailer, which took place Monday at the Stephen J. Ross Theater.

Gunn explained in detail his approach to anchoring fantastical elements in reality.

“If this thing were real, I would always start with it. If there was a super dog, what would it look like? If there was a talking raccoon, where would it come from? And it tries to make everything as outlandish as it really is, kaijus, fortresses, everything.”

In this version of the DC Universe, Gunn explained, Superman exists in a world full of superheroes. “This is an alternate history and fantasy world that has superheroes but is also incredibly down to earth. It’s about real people having real lives. There are simply metahumans there. But Superman exists. He has friends who are other superheroes. He has people he doesn’t get along with very well who are other superheroes.”

Gunn added: “He has a flying dog. He has a huge fortress sticking out of the ground. He fights against huge monsters. He has a lot of the things that we love about the Superman comics and the Superman mythology that we haven’t been able to see as much of in the filmed media, and certainly haven’t been able to see them in an informed way that we hopefully do have created.”

David Corenswet, who plays Superman/Clark Kent, also shared his understanding of the character during the question and answer session.

“I think a lot of people think of Superman as a naive character, at least because they’re naive about him,” he said. “I think there’s some of that there, but I think it’s really just a kind of blindness to the little imperfections and the little conflicts, the stupid little things that we get caught up in as humans. I tend to miss those, and I think Superman misses those, and that’s what keeps him steadfast and determined to look toward the good, the hopeful, and the future, and focus on the fun and playfulness of it to support the present.”

Rachel Brosnahan spoke about bringing Lois Lane into the modern age: “Today, today we live in a world where print journalism is perhaps an endangered art form for some, and she is someone who has dedicated her entire life to it.” Brosnahan described Lois and Superman’s dynamic as that of “soul mates” who are “united in the fact that they both relentlessly pursue truth and justice, but approach the world in completely different ways.”

She added: “I think it’s fun to watch the way they are opposites. It’s fun to see them compete against each other, sometimes in more than one way, and then it’s fun to see them truly united. That’s a bit of a trite answer, but they both work hard and play hard and love hard. I love that.”

Nicholas Hoult, who plays the very comical Lex Luthor, explained how he based his character in a way that the audience at least understood where he was coming from.

“Of course he’s smart and ruthless, and he has to outmaneuver Superman on certain levels because he can’t keep up with him on others, but from my perspective, hopefully there’s something to that character, even if you might not agree with him at his trial.” “It’s an element where you can understand on some levels where he’s coming from and why what he’s pushing as his ideology is perhaps perhaps better for humanity,” he said.

The film will also feature a new interpretation of John Williams’ iconic Superman theme. “Williams theme, that soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time,” Gunn said. “When I was a kid, what I liked most about the film was the music. That’s what I took home with me more than anything else.” Gunn added that composer John Murphy began working on the music before the script was finished.

“I want to use a version of the Williams theme, but I want to do our own version of it. And that’s what you hear,” Gunn said. “What’s really amazing is how that leads into a lot of other pieces, some of which draw on the Williams theme, but others of which are purely John Murphy, goes into it, comes back and it’s used beautifully throughout the film.”

Gunn expressed the essence of the film and emphasized its core message: “I believe in the goodness of people and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, do their best to make ends meet. “I try to be good people. And I think this film is about that, it’s about the basic kindness of people.”

“Superman,” which was shot in IMAX, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
