What Gonzaga’s players said after beating Nicholls

If non-conference play has proven anything about the 2024-25 season so far, it’s that there’s no telling who will rise on the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ scoring charts on any given night.

Some nights it is one of the experienced guards, firing from the barrier, who leads the way to victory. Other matches favor the frontcourt, led of course by the talented duo of Graham Ike and Braden Huff.

Combined, the two add up to over 25 points per game. However, how they achieve this average varies from night to night. Sometimes it’s Ike who asserts himself deep on the block; Other nights, Huff will come off the bench and immediately spark the offense.

On some occasions, like Wednesday, one of the great left-handers doesn’t let that stop him from having a big night.

As the Zags (8-3) entered their non-conference matchup against the Nicholls looking to rebound from back-to-back losses, they leaned on their stud-center combo to get the job done at home. Huff led all scorers with 25 points, coming within one point of tying his career high, while Ike contributed 20 points as the Bulldogs defeated the Colonels 102-72 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Here’s what Huff and Ike had to say after the win.

I’m happy about a rebound game:

“It is like it is. Felt good, but I just need to know who you are. A bad game isn’t the end of the world. So I come back to work the next day and just keep sawing wood like the trainer says. Listen to the game plan and just understand who we are as a team and who I am as an individual and what I bring to this team.”

Huff on what led to a big night for him and Ike:

“The coaches have just been harping on it all week: Be physical down there. Fight for position and be aggressive to score with quick moves. We looked for things early on and then of course we ran onto the floor. And somehow, once you’re able to do that.” You see a couple going in, then that makes things easier.

Ike on Gonzaga’s balanced offensive attack:

“It’s just the squad we have. We have strong hitters, one through ten – one by the number of guys we have – and everyone knows that as long as we keep doing our job, good things will come. don’t do too much; As long as we stick to our roles, everything will be fine.”

Angry with the team’s confidence after a win

“It just feels good to be back on the winning list. It’s been a while since we played at the kennel. The students weren’t here, so it was a little different. But just being back and being back on the winning list was important for us. We just have to take care of business on Saturday night.
