A Georgia appeals court on Thursday barred Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from overseeing election interference prosecutions against President-elect Donald Trump and other defendants.

But the appeals court let stand charges against the defendants, who are accused of crimes related to their efforts to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia to President Joe Biden.

The verdict clears the way for the reopening of the criminal case and a possible trial for the defendants other than Trump. The president-elect is not expected to stand trial during his term in the White House, but he may face a trial after that term ends.

The decision overturns a Fulton County court judge’s ruling that allowed Willis to continue working on the case despite arguments from Trump’s lawyers that she should be disqualified based on the inappropriateness of her romantic relationship with the top prosecutor she chose.

The appeals court said in its decision that the remedy offered by the trial judge – which allowed Willis to remain in the case when the top prosecutor withdrew from the case – was inappropriate.

“We, however, affirm the denial of appellants’ motion to dismiss the charges,” the appeals court said.

The Georgia case is one of two criminal cases still pending against Trump.
