Why James Gunn put Flying Dog Krypto in the film

Move over Benji and Lassie. One of the scene-stealers to look forward to in James Gunn’s new film Superman Film is the Man of Steel’s best friend, namely Krypto the dog.

In a touching moment in the trailer, a bloodied Superman who has fallen onto a snowy earth suddenly whistles, and out of nowhere we see a storm in the distance as Krypto the dog somehow comes to the rescue.

Gunn said at a trailer press conference about the dog’s inclusion in this live-action version of Superman: “I think right from the start we see a slightly different side of Superman than what we’ve seen before.”

“Ultimately, this film is not about power. “This film is about a loose concept of the word ‘human’ and who he is as a person and how he practically struggles in his daily life, and we see a different aspect of him in the beginning.”

“His relationship with crypto is complicated. He is far from the best dog. There’s a lot more to crypto than what you see in this trailer.”

“It was a way of saying we were embracing the whole Superman mythology,” Gunn continued. “These superhero movies take characters and say, ‘Okay, yeah, it’s Batman, but it’s none of the other stuff.’ It’s Superman, but none of that other stuff.”

“He lives in a world full of superheroes. This is an alternate history world that features superheroes but is also incredibly down to earth. The point is that real people have real lives, there are just metahumans out there. Superman has friends who are other superheroes.”

“He’s got a flying dog, he’s got a huge fortress,” Gunn adds. “It has a lot of the things that we love about the Superman comics and the Superman mythology that we haven’t been able to see as much of in a film, and certainly not seen in a down-to-earth way.”
