Justin Herbert of the Chargers strikes with a backhand compliment from the former NFL quarterback

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is one of the most productive and highest-paid players in the NFL, but he seems polarizing to some.

Part of this can be attributed to Herbert’s performance this year compared to other top names like Josh Allen or Joe Burrow.

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, for example, is eager to dive into the film and find out why Herbert only has 16 touchdowns to two interceptions this year. He detailed this and more in a recent episode of Fitz & Whit.

“He’s so confusing to me,” Fitzpatrick said. “Everyone has already praised him because of the way he looks, he’s a beautiful man, he gets his hair cut at Sports Clips and still looks great. He only threw two picks this year. And that’s the story… He plays super conservative and cautious. We look at Josh Allen, Lamar, Burrow, they all have 30+ touchdowns… Herbert has scored 18 touchdowns in 14 games. The sacks are always piled up on him. When they fall behind in games, I don’t think he’s the guy who can bring them back.”

While Fitzpatrick continues to praise Herbert’s toughness, he also wonders if there are still questions about his leadership.

Chargers fans know that Herbert’s numbers have been regressed this year as Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman try (poorly) to run a run-first offense. But he battled multiple lower-body injuries that limited his mobility — while playing behind a weak interior offensive line and with weapons that were destroyed last offseason in the first year of a gentle rebuild.
