Is it really Thursday Night Football if there isn’t some oddity?

Well, at Thursday’s Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers game, there was an event that last happened in 1976.

With eight seconds left in the half and the Broncos leading 21-10, they batted the ball away, hoping time would expire and both teams would be sent to the locker room.

The good news is that the clock was at zero – but the bad news is that Denver was called for fair interference.

Of course, a half can’t end with a defensive penalty or a flag from the opposing team, so the Chargers had the opportunity to make a “fair catch” kick after the penalty moved them up 15 yards.

Cameron Dicker managed to line up unhurriedly for a 57-yard kick, but without any confusion on either side – in fact, the ball didn’t even need to be snapped. Basically, it was as much practice repetition as a real kick could get.

Of course, Dicker did it, and instead of winning 21-10, Denver found itself with an eight-point lead at halftime.

Ironically, the last successful “Fair Catch Kick” was performed in 1976 by none other than San Diego Chargers kicker Ray Wersching.

It was the 27th recorded fair-catch kick in NFL history, including the postseason, and only the seventh to go through the uprights. The last attempt before Thursday was in 2019, when Joey Slye missed from 60 yards.

Dicker’s kick is now the longest fair catch kick in NFL history, surpassing Paul Hornung’s 52-yarder in 1964.

There had been nine unsuccessful attempts between the Chargers’ two free kicks, but this was the shortest attempt. It is not uncommon for the shot to reach a distance of more than 70 yards, as fair catches are usually caught on the opposite side of the field.
