It’s snowing lightly tonight, with some slippery spots during the morning drive to work

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) — While only one or two storms are expected until about 9 p.m., much of the area will see off-and-on light snow around midnight — and likely into mid-morning Friday — as we We are in the area in direct path of an Alberta Clipper! As discussed in yesterday’s forecast discussion, these systems generally don’t have much moisture to work with and, as the name suggests, move fairly quickly. As a result, accumulations are expected to be limited to about 1 inch in most cases, although closer to the Michigan border some communities could experience amounts of about 1.5 inches.

As for the morning commute (4-9am), I would still plan on slowing down – perhaps up to 5 or 10 minutes. Although only about half an inch of accumulation is expected at this point, a small amount can go a long way as the cold season begins! Conditions should improve quickly throughout the late morning and afternoon. However, if you’re traveling to South Bend for the game, be prepared for another inch or two of snow!

The weekend still looks cold, with highs in the 20s, and then warmer conditions (30s to lower 40s) will be the prevailing theme for much of next week, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Eve. While a few showers are possible Monday through Wednesday next week, I don’t expect any significant travel disruptions due to the wintry weather!

I would first like to draw your attention to this: The next big event we’re watching could arrive late next week or the last weekend of 2024 in the form of… highs in the 50s and possibly lows in the 60s! All signs point to a short warm-up (as usual this time of year!), but it will provide another opportunity to get some air before the next blast of cold inevitably hits 🙂
