Police shoot and kill suspect armed with machete after allegedly shooting woman

No officers were injured in the shooting in the 300 block of South Warman Avenue.

INDIANAPOLIS — A man who allegedly shot a woman on Indianapolis’ west side died Thursday afternoon after being shot by police.

According to IMPD, just after 2 p.m. on Dec. 19, officers responded to the 300 block of South Warman Avenue for a report that a person had been shot.

When officers arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. While officers were providing aid to the woman, they received a description of the suspect and other officers began searching the area for the suspect.

Eventually, officers heard gunshots in the area. They then found a man matching the suspect’s description who was reportedly carrying a machete.

According to police, shots were fired at IMPD officers who were pursuing the suspect on foot. The man was found a short time later on the side of a house and officers ordered him to the ground.

The man then allegedly raised the machete and charged at the officers with a weapon. According to IMPD, two officers shot and struck the suspect. Once he was on the ground, the man continued to reach for a gun and an officer fired another shot, according to police.

Officers handcuffed the man and began providing medical treatment. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

The suspect’s name will be released by the Marion County Coroner’s Office at a later date.

Two officers reportedly fired shots during the incident.

Police described the condition of the woman who was allegedly shot by the suspect as “stable.” Investigators are working to determine the possible relationship between the suspect and the woman.

According to police, a gun and a machete were found at the scene.

An IMPD spokesman said video of shots fired at officers was captured by dashboard cameras.

Michael Cantwell told 13News he has been living in a home on nearby Bertha Street for three months. He is the caretaker for the man who owns the house. He and his girlfriend rented an apartment from him. He said the woman the suspect shot was one of his roommates. He said it was a normal day until an acquaintance of one of his roommates came over.

“He was sitting in our house for three or four hours before this even happened,” Cantwell said.

Cantwell said he didn’t know the suspect, but other people in the house did. He said he was in the living room when the suspect randomly started shooting in the kitchen.

“There was no argument, nothing. It was just a normal day. All of a sudden he just started shooting bullets into the house,” Cantwell said. “The officers had every right to shoot him. He was over there shooting randomly.”

Investigators are still investigating the relationship between the suspect and the victim, but IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said he couldn’t help but point out that once again, another community has been affected by senseless violence.

“We need to find ways to deal with our conflicts other than using a handgun or some other type of weapon,” Bailey said.

Cantwell said the victim woman was a single mother. He’s glad she’s still alive and no one else was hurt. And he walks away with a few lessons.

“I will be very conscious of who I want to let into the place where I live. This makes me very protective of my loved ones,” he said.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The shooting will be reviewed by the mostly civilian Use of Force Review Board and an internal IMPD investigation will take place, Bailey said.
