The showrunner of “Born Again” says the show has been recast from a trial to an “action-based New York crime story.”

The series reportedly began filming, and when it came to an end, Marvel decided to switch gears. The studio brought in a new showrunner (Dario Scardapane) and changed the director (Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are the main filmmakers). And now, months later, we are on the verge of: “Daredevil: Reborn” will be published on Disney+.

In a new interview with EW, showrunner Dario Scardapane and Star Charlie Cox spoke about the changes the series has undergone and how instrumental the cast has been in ensuring the series retains what made it successful on Netflix years ago.

Scardapane talked about what the original version of Daredevil: Born Again looked like and what has changed since then.

“It was conceived as more of a legal procedural, and we really brought it back toward an action-based New York crime story,” Scardapane said. “The real trick was taking the DNA of the old Netflix show but then evolving it into something completely new.”

For those who don’t know, Daredevil was originally a three-season series Netflix. The series wasn’t connected to the MCU and kind of existed in its own space. Eventually Netflix lost the rights and Marvel Studios decided to reboot the show in the MCU. However, what was filmed simply didn’t work. This led the stars of the series, along with people from the studio, to believe that much of what made the original series so popular should actually be retained. That meant bringing back the original supporting cast and making major changes to the story. Instead of running away from the original series, “Born Again” was now fully dedicated to it.

As Cox explained, it’s about staying true to what worked in the original series and not trying to dumb it down for a new audience.

“We’ve always talked about the fact that this show had the success that it did and that it appealed to a very specific demographic because it’s one of the few superhero shows that’s so dark and scary at times,” Cox said. “Vincent (D’Onofrio) and I both felt like if you lose that, you risk losing the identity of our show. That’s why we really pushed for the show to continue to be aimed at an older audience and not be downgraded to appeal to a wider audience. I think in some ways it’s even darker than a lot of what we’ve done in the past.”

Now, after all the retooling in the past, Daredevil: Born Again is ready to reach a large audience on Disney+. The series is expected to release on March 4, 2025.
