Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry didn’t have a good explanation for what happened after he went 0 of 7 from the field in Thursday’s 144-93 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

“First time for anything, right?” Curry said to reporters after the game. “I never thought that would be a situation or an outcome of the game. From the first moment they kind of slapped us in the mouth. We had no answer. … That was kind of embarrassing.”

This was the seventh time in 977 regular season games that Curry didn’t take a shot. In four of those games he played less than 10 minutes. His seven shots against the Grizzlies were his most in a game without a mark.

“Damn, this is happening,” Green said when told of Curry’s stats. “Oh shit. That’s crazy…they did a good job. Give them some credit.”

Curry’s two points on Thursday were his fewest in a game since March 8, 2018. He also scored two points against the San Antonio Spurs that night, but played just two minutes before leaving the game in the first quarter after being injured had twisted his ankle.

The 24 minutes Curry spent on the field against the Grizzlies were the longest he has played in a game without scoring a field goal.

Golden State’s problems go far beyond Curry right now. The 51-point loss is the worst defeat by an NBA team in a game this season. It is also the fourth-largest road game loss in Warriors history.

Draymond Green also went scoreless on four field goal attempts in 19 minutes. Andrew Wiggins was the only Warriors starter to score more than five points. Dennis Schröder’s first game after being acquired by the Brooklyn Nets was unforgettable. He finished the game with five points and four turnovers in 22 minutes.

The positive vibe surrounding the Warriors at the start of the season is quickly fading. They have lost nine of their last 11 games after opening the year 12-3. Thursday marked the second straight game in which the defense allowed at least 140 points. They gave up 143 to the Dallas Mavericks on December 15th.

If Curry doesn’t play at an All-NBA level, the Warriors will have a very difficult time winning games. He will try to get the team back on track Saturday when they play the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center.
