In a battle of Oregon quarterbacks, the veteran reminded the rookie who’s boss.

Justin Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers dominated the second half en route to a 34-27 victory over Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos’ offense was in full swing early – Audric Estime found the end zone for the game’s first score and Bo Nox threw touchdowns to unlikely targets Michael Burton and Devaughn Vele. Gus Edwards’ touchdown in the first quarter tied the score, but the Chargers’ offense faltered after that.

However, Los Angeles got a break as the Broncos were called for fair catch interference as their punt expired, giving the Chargers a fair catch kick that Cameron Dicker nailed from 57 yards out. The Broncos led 21-13 at halftime. Amazingly, the last successful fair catch kick occurred in 1976…at the San Diego Chargers.

Denver kicked a field goal early in the third quarter, but scored late on third down to give the Chargers first and goal. They took advantage and Edwards scored again, but her two-point conversion was no good, making it 24-19 in the Broncos’ favor.

However, after forcing a punt, Herbert found Derius Davis for the score, and Joshua Palmer made a great point move to make it a two-pointer, giving Los Angeles a 27-24 lead with 12:23 left.

The Chargers were able to contain the Broncos the rest of the night, and after a big run by Herbert on 3rd-and-10 with under four minutes left, Los Angeles was able to waste even more time. A few plays later, Hassan Haskins stormed into the end zone and with 2:27 left, LA’s lead was 34-24.

The second the Broncos got within field goal range, they fell behind by seven points, with time more important than the touchdown. However, their onside kick was unsuccessful and the Chargers were able to waste the rest of the time to win.

In total, before that late field goal, there were 21 unanswered points for the Chargers, who are now in second place in the AFC West behind the Kansas City Chiefs at 13-1.

Herbert finished the game 23 for 31 with 284 yards and his two touchdown passes. Ladd McConkey led the team with six receptions for 87 yards, and it was the eighth straight game in which the rookie received over 50 yards. He is one game away from breaking Odell Beckham Jr.’s rookie record set in 2014.

Nix impressed again with a score of 29 for 40 and 263 yards.

Both teams completed passes to 10 different receivers – the 20 total pass catchers are the most in the NFL this season.

The Chargers can make the playoffs as their final two games are against the Patriots and Raiders, but both are away. It’s a tougher finish for Denver with Cincinnati and the Chiefs on the schedule.
