The timing of Congress’ vote on the spending bill is up in the air as the government shutdown looms

Republican lawmakers hinted that the House could vote on another CR proposal on Friday to avert the looming partial government shutdown, but the timing remains unclear.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Florida, speaking to reporters outside Speaker Mike Johnson’s office, said lawmakers were “very close to an agreement” and suggested a vote could take place in the morning.

“I don’t think the government will shut down. “You’re going to see some great things that are very similar to President Trump’s plan from yesterday,” the congresswoman said.

Luna added that “there will be no deals with the Democrats.”

However, Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., told reporters that it was not certain whether there would be a vote as early as Friday morning.

“I have no reason to believe there will be a vote at 10 a.m.,” Johnson said. “I know some people would like to get something on the floor this morning.”

Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, leaving a Democratic caucus meeting Friday, also told reporters that Democrats were unaware of the timing of a possible vote.

Democratic members told reporters that Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., had been negotiating with Johnson to reach a deal before the deadline for a partial government shutdown, but suggested that Republicans put the original bipartisan agreement on the floor should.

House Republican negotiators reached a tentative agreement late Friday to avert a partial government shutdown, sources told Fox News Digital.

Two people familiar with the discussions told Fox News Digital late Friday morning that House Republican negotiators had tentatively reached an agreement that would include a short-term extension of this year’s federal funding, disaster relief funding and agricultural support for farmers – however under three separate measures bills.

The speaker originally put forward a 1,547-page bipartisan deal that would have extended the federal funding deadline to March 14, but the proposal failed after Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the spending bill.

A new Trump-backed proposal was hastily negotiated on Thursday but failed to pass the House of Representatives on Thursday evening.

The bill needed to be passed by two-thirds of the House of Representatives chamber, but failed to even reach a majority as two Democrats voted with a majority of Republicans to pass the bill and 38 Republican members opposed it.
