A high surf warning remains in effect for most of the north and west coasts

A high surf warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday for the north and west coasts of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai, as well as the north shore of Maui, as a series of large waves continue to sweep across the Hawaiian Islands.

The National Weather Service is warning of “dangerously large, breaking waves” of 18 to 25 feet, expected to increase to 20 to 30 feet on the north shore of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, Molokai and Maui. On the west-facing shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai, breaking waves will increase from 12 to 18 feet to 15 to 20 feet.

“A series of large waves from northwest to north-northwest will move through Hawaiian waters through Monday,” NWS forecasters said. “The overlapping wave pulses are likely to keep surf near or above warning thresholds for at least the weekend, with the largest swell expected on Sunday.”

Officials are urging the public to avoid affected shorelines and to delay entering or exiting channels affected by the high surf due to strong currents and dangerous conditions for navigation.

The high surf warning is likely to be extended into the weekend as waves continue to increase.

In addition to the high surf advisory, a small craft advisory remains in effect until 6:00 p.m. Friday for waters exposed to the large northwest swell, including the northwest waters of Kauai, the windward waters of Oahu and the Kaiwi Channel. Sea states are expected to be between 10 and 16 feet, making conditions dangerous for small vessels.

Inexperienced sailors are advised to avoid navigating in these conditions and the advisory is likely to be extended through the weekend.

Stable and dry conditions will persist across the islands for most of the weekend. A slight increase in windward showers is expected today and again Sunday night into Monday as two back-to-back frontal systems approach.

Light winds ahead of the fronts will bring intermittent land and sea breezes with afternoon clouds and isolated showers over inland and leeward areas. Trade winds are forecast to strengthen early next week as the second front dissipates.
