Kraven the Hunter made box office history for a very bad reason after setting an unwanted record.

Sony’s Marvel spin-off is a standalone story focusing on villains from the Spider-Man comics and follows three Venom films and Morbius. Sony owns the rights to these characters, but in 2019 renegotiated the deal to share them with Disney, opening it up to possible appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe was filmed in 2022, but its release was pushed back from July to November 2023 due to the Hollywood strikes.

Although Sony has given the film a promotional push in recent weeks, reviews of the film appear to be terrible – including a one-star review The Independentwho called it “abysmal” – affected the desires of moviegoers: Kraven the Hunter had the worst opening weekend of any Marvel film produced by Sony.

The film grossed just $11 million (£8.7 million) in the US and $15 million (£11.8 million) worldwide, for a total box office take of $26 million (£20.5 million). ) – an even paltry amount considering the cost is between $110 million and $150 million. $150m (£86.9m to £118.5m).

These global revenues stand behind the equally vilified Morbiusstarring Jared Leto, which grossed $39 million. Madam Web was another Sony-released Spider-Man spin-off that, despite being despised by critics, grossed half of its budget by grossing $49.1 million in its opening weekend alone.

Sony has had great success with the Venom series, which became a surprise hit when it launched in 2018.

The first Venom earned $856.1 million (£676.2 million) with its sequel in 2021 Venom: Let There Be Carnage Accumulating $506.8 million (£400.3 million).

This is now the third and final entry in the series, Venom: The Last Dancehas earned $475.5m (£375.6m) since its release earlier this year. At the time of writing, it is the ninth highest-grossing film of the year.
