Vehicle crashes into crowded Christmas market in Germany, killing two people and injuring dozens

At least two people were killed and more than 60 injured when a car drove through a crowded Christmas market in eastern Germany on Friday. The suspected driver, who was a doctor from Saudi Arabia living in Germany, was arrested, according to a local official.

The suspect acted alone and there was no ongoing threat to the public. According to the news agency, the official did not rule out additional deaths due to the severity of some of the injuries.

The victims included an adult and a child, the official said.

A short video of the incident shows dozens of people being run over while others scramble to safety. The vehicle races straight ahead before turning right, away from the camera’s field of view.

Reuters reported that a spokesman for the city of Magdeburg described the incident as an “attack.” Numerous people were injured and area hospitals were preparing for a mass casualty event, the spokesman said.

“Extensive police operations are currently taking place at the Magdeburg Christmas market. The Christmas market in the city center is closed,” the police said in a post on X. The police also set up a hotline for those affected to contact their relatives.

The driver of the car was arrested, Reuters reported, citing dpa.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned of difficult times.

“My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” said Scholz in a post on X. “We stand by their side and by the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”

German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck lamented the incident and called it “terrible news” in a post on X.

In an eerily similar incident, a driver drove into a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more.

Police in New York City have increased security at Christmas markets as a precaution and in response to the incident in Germany, a senior NYPD official told NBC News on Friday.

Additional resources will be sent to numerous holiday markets and iconic locations throughout the city. Some overseas markets have been threatened, but there has been no specific threat locally, the official said.
