DeLauro: “President Musk” be on guard.

New Haven Democratic U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s party will no longer be in power when Congress returns next month. On Thursday, she gave a taste of how she will continue to influence the work that gets done or doesn’t get done.

DeLauro did this after President-elect Donald Trump and his henchman Elon Musk (whom she referred to as “President Musk”) urged their fellow Republicans in the House of Representatives to defeat a bipartisan continuing resolution calling for a government shutdown this weekend would prevent three-month funding bill.

DeLauro, the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, quickly created a spreadsheet showing how many millions of dollars each state would lose without the bipartisan bill providing disaster relief.

She titled the graphic – which was first published on PunchBowl News – “Disaster Supplemental: What Elon Will Cost Your State.”

Their state-by-state chart showed how much money is at stake for the red states that voted for Trump’s re-election. For example, the bill’s emergency disaster relief includes $10.8 billion for hurricane-stricken Florida, $9.2 billion for hurricane-stricken North Carolina and $2.6 billion for Iowa. (Connecticut would also receive $2.9 billion; California would receive $7 billion.)

“The disaster supplement provides critical funding for families in all 50 states … (to) restore their communities and restore their local economies,” DeLauro wrote in an introduction to the table. (See it here.)

“Hardworking Americans bravely persevered in the face of terrible disasters and waited patiently for long-overdue help to manage and finance reconstruction and recovery efforts. This additional disaster funding is critical to reconnecting regions, reviving economies and restoring a sense of normality where disasters have upended daily life. Delaying the deployment of resources will only lead to greater suffering and a slower recovery for those who desperately want to move on.”

It was unclear Thursday whether disaster relief could actually survive in a new version of legislation to further fund the government. Musk and Trump criticized Republicans in Congress for agreeing to a deal that included many other independent allocations for Democratic priorities, a price paid for the Democratic votes needed to pass legislation in a closely divided House. Whatever happens, DeLauro has signaled that she will not sit quietly for the next two years to see what changes Trump and Musk have planned for her administration.
