Harry Kane returned from injury as Bayern Munich confidently asserted their authority in the Bundesliga by beating fourth-placed RB Leipzig 5-1 on Friday in a game that was the first in the league’s history There were two goals in the first two minutes.

Kane suffered a hamstring injury against Borussia Dortmund last month.

After losing their first league game of the season to Mainz last week, Bayern put in a confident performance against a Leipzig team that was struggling to build momentum on offense.

Bayern lead the table with 36 points, seven points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who play Freiburg on Saturday. Eintracht Frankfurt is in third place with 27 goals and is ahead of Leipzig on goal difference.

It will be the 26th time that Bayern have taken the top spot at Christmas, having won the title in 23 of the previous 25 times.

The game got off to a remarkable start when Kane’s clever backheel error sent Michael Olise wide and after 28 seconds he crossed to the red-hot Jamal Musiala who buried the ball.

Leipzig hit back almost immediately when Loïs Openda escaped down the right and his cross was fired home by Benjamin Sesco – the first time in Bundesliga history that two goals were scored in the first two minutes.

Bayern dominated the rest of the game and scored their second goal in the 25th minute when former Leipzig player Konrad Laimar scored his first Bayern goal by side-footing a volley from a clever Olise cross.

Joshua Kimmich fired a typical long-range shot into the goal after 36 minutes to give the hosts a deserved 3-1 lead at half-time, while Leipzig failed to manage another shot on target.

The visitors showed a little more attack in the second half without appearing dangerous, while Bayern continued to create chances.

Olise rolled narrowly wide, Kane fired a powerful shot too close to goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi and Leroy Sané shot wide before heading in the fourth after a through ball from Alphonso Davies on 75 minutes.

Two minutes later, Davies headed the fifth goal from a perfect Kimmich cross.

A miserable evening for Leipzig ended when Benjamin Henrichs suffered a serious injury in the final minute, collapsing on the pitch outside the game and being carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
