No coach wants to provide an opponent with cliched bulletin board material before a big game. But Georgia head coach Kirby Smart may have done just that if Indiana advances from the first round of the College Football Playoff.

At an appearance on College game day Before the Hoosiers’ game against Notre Dame on Friday, Smart incorrectly called the school Purdue:

Purdue and Indiana may not have the most heated rivalry in college football, but their history goes back more than a century. Their first meeting took place in 1891.

If anything, the fact that neither is a traditional powerhouse in college football has likely increased the animosity. No matter how your season unfolded, competing for the Old Oaken Bucket was an opportunity to erase much of that disappointment.

The confusion with Purdue will always anger the Hoosier faithful. The combination of who made the comment and when they said it is likely to add to the anger.

As Pat McAfee was quick to point out MatchdayIndiana ended the regular season with a 66-0 win over the Boilermakers. It was the most one-sided result ever between the two schools. They were mirror images of each other as the Hoosiers jumped out to an 11-1 lead and Purdue finished 1-11. There was no doubt who was superior on the field.

Some will also likely view Smart’s comment as a Freudian slip. Maybe he’s not giving Indiana the respect it deserves based on its performance this season.

Should Curt Cignetti’s team defeat Notre Dame, you can bet that this will be a minor subplot before the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.
