Why Kurtis Rourke, Indiana, could play Cinderella in the College Football Playoff

In college sports, legends are born and dreams come true.

And the new College Football Playoff gives us a new chance for a story this season.

Twelve teams now vie for the elusive title, with the perennial powers having to overcome teams not often included in the national championship conversation.

Since the inception of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 1998, we have never seen a non-Power Five conference team win the national championship.

BYU was the last team to be elected national champions as a non-Power Five Conference team in 1984.

It’s unlikely something like that will happen again this year since Boise State is the only team not in a Power Five, but there’s still plenty of intrigue surrounding the underdog roster here.

In college basketball, seemingly every team has a shot at winning, and we love following the Cinderella stories of obscure schools all the way to the March Madness tournament.

One could argue that just one team making the playoffs is something out of a storybook.

These are the Indiana Hoosiers, who were rated outside the top 50 in the preseason according to most sites, including No. 89 in CFB Select, the lowest of any team that made the rankings.

Indiana, whose only loss came against Ohio State, has all the makings of a tough game behind a strong defense and dynamic quarterback play from sixth-year transfer Kurtis Rourke.

The 1.80 meter tall, 100 kilogram senior from Ontario, Canada, dominates Rourke with a solid offense and plenty of support at running back.

Running backs Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton are one of the more dangerous duos in the country and should put a lot of strain on the defense, especially against Notre Dame on Friday night.

Indiana enters this game as a fair underdog, seven points, in South Bend, Illinois.

With freezing temperatures and one of the better defenses in college football (4.1 yards allowed per game, third-best in the FBS), Indiana is a tough game for anyone.

The Notre Dame-Indiana winner faces Georgia, which will likely be without starting quarterback Carson Beck after he suffered an elbow injury in the SEC Championship Game win over Texas.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

Or should we? It’s always fun to dream about the little guy making it big.
