Magdeburg: Police arrest suspect after attack on German Christmas market | World News

The moment the suspect in a deadly attack on a German Christmas market was arrested was captured on video by a passerby.

At least two people were killedincluding a small child, and dozens more were injured when a car drove “at high speed” into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, according to local officials.

Officials say the suspect is a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who first came to Germany in 2006.

The footage shows the suspect raising his hands and lying on the ground on a busy street before being surrounded by armed police.

They then handcuff him and an officer appears to be sitting on his back.

There is a dark car next to him.

Police arrest suspect after incident at Magdeburg Christmas market in Germany.

Magdeburg is located around 100 miles west of the German capital Berlin.

Shortly after 7 p.m. local time, the Magdeburg police were called to the scene of the accident.

In a statement, police said: “The suspect is believed to be a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia.”

“The man was immediately arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

“We are currently assuming that the attack was carried out by a lone perpetrator.”

The Prime Minister of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, said two people died and at least 68 were injured in the attack.

One of the deceased was a small child, he said.

Politicians and senior government officials in Germany have expressed their sadness following the incident.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on the social media platform X: “My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

“We stand by your side and by the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”

The country’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, wrote on X: “The news from Magdeburg is deeply shocking. The emergency services are doing everything they can to care for the injured and save lives.”

“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. The security authorities will clarify the background.”

Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck wrote: “What terrible news from Magdeburg, where people wanted to spend the Advent season in peace and community.”

“My thoughts are with the victims and their families. I would like to thank all the emergency services on site who are doing everything they can to help.”

Other people from abroad also expressed their condolences. In a post on X, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban wrote: “We pray for the families of the victims.”
