Bristol Rovers 1-1 Wrexham: Promise Omochere saves Gas to beat the Dragons

Promise Omochere scored a crucial late equalizer to ease the pressure on managerless Bristol Rovers and dent Wrexham’s chances of promotion to League One.

Playing with pouring rain in their faces in the first half, Wrexham were initially angered by the combative approach of a Rovers side under the temporary management of David Horseman, who took charge following the dismissal of Matt Taylor.

But as the visitors settled down, Matty James had too much space to direct a ball through the Rovers defense which Elliot Lee smashed low past the left hand of goalkeeper Josh Griffiths.

James McClean almost doubled Wrexham’s lead but saw his shot hit the post from Ryan Barnett’s cross.

Lee had to leave the pitch before half-time with a knock and was replaced at the top by Paul Mullin, Wrexham’s top scorer last season, who had to wait for time this season, while Rovers also lost Michael Forbes to injury early on and Luke Thomas for Substituted him defense.

Horseman made two further changes at the break: Omochere replaced Taylor Moore and Joel Senior for Scott Sinclair, while Kamil Conteh and Omochere created half-chances as the Gas looked for an equaliser.

Wrexham gradually regained the control they had enjoyed in the first half but failed to score a second goal that would surely have put the result beyond doubt.

Rovers paid when Barnett failed to deal with a bouncing ball and Thomas struck to find Omochere at the back post, who scored a late equalizer with a header past Mark Howard.

That leaves Wrexham in third place on goal difference behind Birmingham City, who have three games left and are out of action until their game against Crawley Town on Monday evening.

Rovers are now three points above the relegation places and awaiting the appointment of Taylor’s replacement.
