Leading Democrats criticize Musk’s role in the government shutdown drama

Prominent Democrats criticized Elon Musk’s influence in negotiations to avert a possible government shutdown this weekend and questioned his behind-the-scenes role in shaping Republican strategy. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said Musk’s involvement suggested he was “in charge for Trump and the Republicans” and asked pointedly, “Who’s in charge?”

The criticism followed a tumultuous week on Capitol Hill in which Speaker Mike Johnson dealt with intense infighting within the Republican Party and last-minute demands from President-elect Donald Trump. The Senate finally passed a bipartisan funding bill early Saturday by a vote of 85-11, avoiding a shutdown hours before the deadline. The package, which temporarily funds federal operations through March and provides $100 billion in disaster relief, excludes Trump’s call for a long-term debt ceiling increase.

The Associated Press reported that Johnson won House approval by a vote of 366-34 after scaling back proposals previously rejected by Trump and Musk. “This is a good result for the country,” Johnson said, adding that Trump was “certainly happy about this result too.”

Democrats gave decisive support to the bill, while nearly three dozen conservative Republicans opposed it. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer declared, “There will be no government shutdown,” but stressed the challenges ahead as Republicans prepare to tackle next year’s debt ceiling debate.

Musk’s involvement, seen by critics as emblematic of the outsized influence of wealthy individuals, sparked broader concerns. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders described it as “not democracy, this is oligarchy.”

President Joe Biden is expected to sign the measure on Saturday, providing temporary relief to federal workers and programs.
