Costco may be in for a controversial change to its food court

Costco was in the headlines quite a bit last year for making big changes to the warehouse: The brand finally raised membership prices after years of speculation, then required members to scan their membership cards at the entrance, and even restricted access to the food store. Court a members only. And that’s not the only divisive change that has taken place at the food court this year.

Earlier this year, Costco swapped its churros for warm cookies and switched from strawberry sundaes to chocolate sundaes. Some fans love the new products while others protested. Now we’re hearing that another big change could be coming to the low-cost dining destination.

Costco may switch to Coca-Cola products

For more than a decade, it’s been a ritual for us to go to Costco to shop and then buy a hot dog and a Pepsi for $1.50, but that might be changing. Don’t worry: the price won’t go up.

Instead, the hot dog pairing could transform from a Pepsi product to a Coca-Cola one. According to Instagram account Costco Insider, stores could return to using Cola products in their food courts next year. For some, it’s a long-awaited return to form — Costco served Coca-Cola products in its food courts until the company switched to Pepsi in 2013.

Costco Insider wrote: “After a standoff in which Costco withdrew all Coke products for a month, Coke lowered its prices, allowing Costco to switch back in early 2025. Coke’s focus on machine quality and its partnership with Costco are likely to be the driving force for change.”

Since Costco switched to Pepsi, customers have complained about the quality of the machine. On Reddit, posters hope this change could lead to improved soda dispensers.

“I hope this means they get new water fountain dispensers,” one Redditer wrote. “Since switching to Pepsi, two out of three dispensers are pumping out 50% syrup and 50% pure, non-carbonated water.”

“I could handle it if they stayed calibrated. Every time I go it’s too syrupy or too light so it tastes like water,” said another.

But overall, this announcement has left fans divided. “Thank God. Sorry Pepsi, but Coke products taste better,” read one popular comment on the Instagram post. While another declared: “It’s a sad day.”

We reached out to Costco for comment and confirmation of the news but had not received a response at the time of publication. Overall, it seemed that the number of Coca-Cola fans who were excited to return was slightly larger than the number of Pepsi fans who were disappointed. So hopefully this rumor turns out to be true.
