The Texas football program will make history on Saturday by competing in the first 12 College Football Playoffs. Better yet for the local fans? The Longhorns will host Clemson at Royal-Memorial Stadium in the first-round game.

Aside from the historical significance that comes with playing in the first expanded CFP, the game features numerous storylines. Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik returns to his hometown of Austin, where he never lost a game and led Westlake High School to back-to-back state championships as the starting quarterback. And some of his best friends from Westlake now play for Texas, including star safety Michael Taaffe.

Oh, and Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers was a high school rival of Klubnik’s: The two met in a state championship game while Ewers played for Southlake Carroll High School in the Dallas area.

Texas receiver Isaiah Bond apparently won’t play against Clemson as he watches the team’s warmups in sweatpants and a hoodie. Bond is dealing with an ankle injury suffered in the Dec. 7 SEC Championship game against Georgia. Sarkisian said Thursday that Bond didn’t practice at all during the break last week, but “I’m optimistic he’ll be able to compete on Saturday, but again, time always tells, especially given the injury he has.”
