NFL music chief Seth Dudowsky announced that Kendrick Lamar has agreed to headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans: “Few artists have influenced music and culture as profoundly as Kendrick Lamar.”

He won’t get an argument from me.

In the same press release, Lamar himself commented on the selection.

“Rap music is still the most influential genre today,” he said. “And I will be there to remind the world why. You found the right thing.”

Jay-Z also chimed in, saying, “Kendrick Lamar is truly a one-of-a-kind artist and performer.” His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture worldwide. Kendrick’s work transcends music and his influence will be felt for years to come.”

On Monday, December 16, Lil Wayne reflected on his hometown snub with sportscaster Skip Bayless on The Skip Bayless Show, saying he and Lamar had spoken about the controversy.

“I spoke to him,” he said. “And I wished him well and told him, ‘You’d better kill it, you’ve got to kill it.'”

Will Kendrick Lamar perform with SZA at the Super Bowl halftime show?

If Lamar does indeed bring a special guest to New Orleans, it would be really awkward if SZA wasn’t there. Finally, they are set to embark on a co-headlining tour in April.

SZA guests on two tracks on Lamar’s new album, including the hit single “Luther,” which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

SZA also had a feature on Lamar’s hit single from the Black Panther soundtrack, “All the Stars,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100.

Halftime entertainers don’t get big salaries to play in the Super Bowl.

They do union scale. But that’s just a tiny fraction of what they earn playing without a soccer game competing for their spotlight.

According to Local 586 of the American Federation of Musicians, the flat rate for a performance in a room the size of State Farm Stadium in Arizona in 2023, when Rihanna played the Super Bowl in Glendale, would be $450 for “the leader.” In this case it would be Lamar and $400 per person for the supporting musicians.

Lamar doesn’t seem like the type of entertainer to let chart placement or streaming numbers influence his set list, but that’s really all we have to do.

He has sent five singles to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 – “Humble,” “Like That,” “Not Like Us,” “Squabble Up” and the Taylor Swift collaboration “Bad Blood.”

His most streamed songs on Spotify, all of which have reached one billion streams, are “Humbl,” “All the Stars” (featuring SZA), “Money Trees,” “Love” (featuring Zacari), and “DNA.”

According to setlist.fm, he has performed these five songs live at least 300 times – “mAAd city”, “Swimming Pools (Drank), “Backstreet Freestyle”, “Money Trees” and “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”.

The Super Bowl LIX 2025 halftime show will be produced by DPS. Roc Nation and Jesse Collins are executive producers and Hamish Hamilton is director. Roc Nation is also the strategic entertainment advisor for the live performance.

Creative direction will come from Lamar’s company pgLang, which managed his acclaimed “Big Steppers” tour, which ran from 2022 to early 2024.

The 2025 Super Bowl will take place at Caesars Superdome, 1500 Sugar Bowl Drive, in the Central Business District of New Orleans.

This is the eighth Super Bowl hosted at the Superdome.
