Which rust? Team Woods shoots 59 and shares the lead at the PNC Championship

While he won’t equal the PGA Tour’s winning record, Tiger Woods is on his way to another win.

In his first competitive appearance since the Open Championship in July, Woods and his son Charlie teamed up for a 13-under 59 Saturday in the scramble format of the PNC Championship to share a share of the lead with the Langers and Singhs in the first to take over the round.

Tiger and Charlie Woods have played in the PNC every year since 2020 but have yet to win.

“Being able to have these experiences with Charlie and putting each other in their place – normally everyone jokes against each other every day, but this week it’s for each other,” Tiger said. “We just push so hard for each of us to get the shot we want.”

The duo (and with Tiger’s daughter Sam on the ball) combined for 13 birdies, including five in a row on the back nine, and didn’t miss a single shot in the best-ball format at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.

After his sixth back, Woods swung freely and routinely hit the momentum-sustaining shot when his partner was in trouble. Charlie, a high school sophomore, was hot on the putter midway through the round to praise a few of his successful drives.

“I’m a great cheerleader,” Tiger said.

When asked what he needed to do on Sunday, Charlie said: “Just have fun. I feel like I struggled there. Just concentrate too much on the game. Just have fun and trust him.”

The PNC is an unofficial team event. However, Woods is seeking his first win since the Zozo Championship in fall 2019, the 82nd title of his PGA Tour career.

“We’re right there,” Tiger said. “There are a lot of teams that are up there. We have to do another good lap tomorrow.”
