Greg McElroy: Benching Quinn Ewers for Arch Manning would be ‘detrimental’ to Texas.

Greg McElroy: Benching Quinn Ewers for Arch Manning would be ‘detrimental’ to Texas.

Greg McElroy believes Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns have to hold on to their faith Quinn Ewers during their College Football Playoffs run, and he uses the film Mean Girls to make his point clear.

Some think Arch Manning could take over as Texas’ starting quarterback if Ewers falters during the Longhorns’ clash with the USA Clemson Tigers on Saturday afternoon. At an appearance on Stand upMcElroy explained that Sarkisian needs to get through this run with Ewers before handing the keys to the car to Manning in 2025.

“I’ve been saying that for some time. I have a younger sister and there was a movie that she watched passionately when we were a little younger. It’s a movie called Mean Girls. There is a moment in the Mean Girls Movie where they say, ‘Stop trying to make retrievals happen.’ That’s kind of what I’m going to say about this Arch thing,” McElroy explained. “Now let’s stop trying to make Arch his uncles. He will get there. In time he will be a great player. I really believe in its benefits. I believe in his mobility. I think he could seriously have a package in this system. I think in this playoff it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him on the field in the red zone.

“But being on the field right now for more than just situational play, I think, would be detrimental to an offense that probably needs to claw its way to victory. If you look at the teams they will likely face leading up to the national championship, they will have to give it their all to win the national championship. So I think Arch will be a great player situationally, but at this point Quinn is your guy and should hopefully lead you to the promised land if you’re a Longhorns fan.”

While McElroy’s plan sounds all well and good in theory, it remains to be seen how Sarkisian will react if Texas is down at any point during his CFP term. Nick Saban wasn’t afraid of the change Jalen hurts To Tua Tagovailoa during the national title game, and it paid off handsomely for Alabama. That’s something Sarkisian will keep in mind.

It remains to be seen how Texas fares, but Steve Sarkisian is aware of the expectations currently weighing on his shoulders. Whether it’s Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning at quarterback, the Longhorns expect to hoist the trophy at the end.
