A Tennessee WR return against Ohio State in the CFP is questionable

It’s questionable whether Squirrel White will return to Tennessee’s football game at Ohio State on Saturday because of a lower-body injury.

The junior wide receiver went to the locker room in the second quarter. He had one catch for 17 yards before departing.

Freshman Braylon Staley received snaps after White was injured. Staley had played in three games this season. Towards the end of the second quarter, he made the second catch of his career.

White was one of three Tennessee wide receivers who wore non-contact red jerseys during CFP practice while recovering from injuries that forced them out of the Vanderbilt game on Nov. 30. He battled a shoulder injury during the back half of the regular season.

The Vols have had four wide receivers enter the portal since the regular season, including Chaz Nimrod and Kaleb Webb. Nimrod and Webb were backup players for the Vols and Nimrod likely would have played in White’s place. Nathan Leacock and Nate Spillman also entered the portal.

Their departures nearly halved the number of receiving players from ten scholarship players during the regular season to six in the postseason. Sophomore Chris Brazzell, freshman Mike Matthews and freshman Braylon Staley round out the group.
